How the mechanism works, in plain terms
S. boulardii is a transient strain: it competitively adheres to the gut epithelium and temporarily blocks pathogen attachment as it passes through the GI tract. A specific serine protease neutralises Clostridium toxins, and the strain's natural resistance to antibiotics and sulphonamides means it can be used alongside antibiotic therapy without transferring resistance genes to pathogens.
